The most important task for me to complete in the morning is to not leave the house frowning.
Quickly describe your morning routine.
My morning routine consists of quick “thank you for waking me up this morning” prayer, check phone for any important missed calls or texts, shower, teeth brushing, get dressed, look at board of short term and long term goals before leaving room, grab lunch from refrigerator and throw it into my backpack, throw on my headphones and my Spotify playlist, out the door.
How often do you change your morning routine?
Just on the weekends. My weekends are more fluid as I travel a lot of weekends or have a laundry list of To-Dos I need to tackle. Other than that, I am pretty consistent in the morning routine
Do you use an alarm or a specific app to help you wake up?
I use two alarms set at varying times between 7AM-8AM. I use an alarm app on my Galaxy Note phone, and I use an alarm clock app on my Macbook Pro.
I actually wake up to a song my Varsity Basketball Team and I created in my home studio back in High School called “I Brush My Teeth in the Morning.”
I like to start my day with a laugh, and I literally laugh every morning because the song is that ridiculous.
Do you eat breakfast in the morning, if so, what do you typically have?
I eat breakfast every morning, and it’s either a bagel or oatmeal.
I buy groceries and take those to work and leave them there.
That way I am not worried about breakfast at home; I can focus on getting to the office, and then eat breakfast once there.
What is the first drink you have in the morning, and at what time?
I usually drink a cup of water every morning before walking out the door.
I then drink the largest coffee I can find once I get into the office. The cup of water is usually around 8:30AM to 9:00AM.
Do you exercise in the morning and/or meditate in the morning?
No exercise nor meditation in the morning. I just pray in the morning when I wake up.
How soon after waking up do you check your phone? [Check/send emails, social media]
Pretty immediate, actually. I had a terrible incident my freshman year of college, where I left my phone for hours in my bedroom while out chatting in the common area of the dorm. I came back to my phone and had missed dozens of calls from my family because we had a death in my family. I never recovered from that, so I am pretty glued to my phone immediately in the morning.
What are the most important tasks you complete in the morning?
The most important task for me to complete in the morning is to not leave the house frowning. I know that seems weird but that’s why I have things like my alarm clock song set to really put me in a good mood EARLY.
I am NOT a morning person, and this is something I am well aware of, but I do know there are things I can do to better “trick” myself into thinking that I am. So, the most important task is to find a way to smile in the morning.
What is your bedtime routine?
I hardly sleep, honestly. My routine is usually me in bed working on whatever website or project I need to complete.
Once I come to a place where I am good on work for the evening, I try to catch up on whatever show I missed that night (I don’t like watching TV shows at the exact time they come on TV). I find that having a balance of TV shows, an “on the train book”, and my work helps balance me out.
Are you able to keep the same routine when you’re traveling or in a different environment?
Absolutely not. My routine changes when I am in different environments. This is because each situation is different so I tend to go with the flow of the situation (i.e. if I’m on vacation then I really just relax and give my brain a rest so I don’t set strict things for me to follow). The same when visiting a friends house, I tend to take my cues from them. It just depends on the situation.
Do you stick to your routine on the weekends or do you tweak it?
Nope. Weekends are a play it by ear type of affair. If I have work to do, I am really big on utilizing my weekend hours to knock out projects I am working on. If I don’t have huge deadlines or work I usually am out in the streets celebrating life or traveling to see family and friends in different cities.
Do you see a change in your day if you forget/don’t to follow your morning routine?
YES! One thing I didn’t mention is that when I leave my place in the morning I am usually listening to Gospel music. I usually feel that if I can’t get my morning gospel on, my day is totally out of whack. I mean, my attitude is totally not as pleasant as it usually is or I’m not productive that day. It’s a weird thing, but it’s mine and I own it.
