The place where I go astray the most is getting into personal social media/text messages early in the morning. It typically delays my arrival at work as well as messes up my focus for my morning tasks at work.
Quickly describe your morning routine.
During the week, I typically wake up around 6 AM. The first thing I do is check my phone for any overnight business related messages/emails. I then get my breakfast started (steel cut oats) and then go to brush my teeth while a daily Christian podcast message plays in the background. I watch CNBC while I eat breakfast and then head off to work. I’m a corporate strategist for a Fortune 12 company.
How often do you change your morning routine?
My weekend routines are different. During the week, I almost never change my routine. The only thing that may change is I may wake up later if I had a long night and if I wake up too late I may skip breakfast.
Do you use an alarm or a specific app to help you wake up?
I use an app called Sleep Time because it (supposedly) tracks your sleeping patterns while you’re in bed I find its gradually increasing alarm a better experience to wake to than the default iPhone alarm.
Do you eat breakfast in the morning, if so, what do you typically have?
Yes, every day. I eat steel cut oats with some almond milk, Greek yogurt, and blueberries (all in the same bowl). Sometimes, I will also eat two eggs scrambled and a half a cinnamon roll. I drink green tea instead of coffee.
What is the first drink you have in the morning, and at what time?
I drink Green tea, I typically put it in a thermos and drink it on the way to work.
Do you exercise in the morning and/or meditate in the morning?
I tried doing morning meditation but I always just fall back asleep haha. I find that my workouts are better when I do them in the afternoon after work.
How soon after waking up do you check your phone? [Check/send emails, social media]
It’s the first thing I do. But I am only checking for business related messages email, not personal. I save the personal for my elevator ride to my car in the morning. I try to limit texting and personal social media use until lunchtime as the morning is my most productive time, and it’s easy to get side tracked.
What are the most important tasks you complete in the morning?
The most important tasks I complete in the morning are the most difficult thing I have to work on in a given day at work. The same is true on Saturdays when I’m working on my business. I find this to be a key to success.
What is your bedtime routine?
I take 20 minutes to review my sermon notes from church the previous week and pray. I then turn on The Daily Show and set my sleep timer for 30 minutes. I’m always asleep before the episode ends.
Are you able to keep the same routine when you’re traveling or in a different environment?
No, my vacations are an opportunity to break from my routine. It is actually an opportunity to add or delete from my routine when I try something new when on vacation. I rarely travel for work so most of my travel is for pleasure.
Do you stick to your routine on the weekends or do you tweak it?
On the weekends, I wake up later and don’t typically listen to the Christian podcast or CNBC. I do make it a point to make sure I do my hardest task in the morning however as that is my most productive time.
Do you see a change in your day if you forget/don’t to follow your morning routine?
Yes, most definitely. The place where I go astray the most is getting into personal social media/text messages early in the morning. It typically delays my arrival at work as well as messes up my focus for my morning tasks at work.
