When I miss my morning workout, I usually remain lethargic the rest of the day. My mind is less sharp, I try hard not to fall asleep at my stand-up desk.
Quickly describe your morning routine.
I usually am up at 5:45 AM to 6:15 AM depending on how I slept the night before.
I usually immediately unlock my iPhone to read emails and/or news alerts.
During my reading, I make a quick breakfast drink as much water as I can down in 15 minutes, then head to the track for a sprint workout or the gym for Crossfit.
If I decided to go on a run, I return home to meditate for 15 minutes, shower and get dressed for my work-day.
How often do you change your morning routine?
I rarely deviate from my morning routine.
Do you use an alarm or a specific app to help you wake up?
I do not use an alarm to wake up. I do set an alarm for 7:15 AM on my Garmin Vivofit Watch, but I wake up before the alarm goes off, 90% of the time.
Do you eat breakfast in the morning, if so, what do you typically have?
I eat three eggs and a half-quart of water daily. I do not have an appetite in the morning.
What is the first drink you have in the morning, and at what time?
The first beverage I drink is Water, about 15 minutes after waking.
Do you exercise in the morning and/or meditate in the morning?
I exercise in the morning. I ran track in college,
so waking before dawn to head to the weight room or track is something
I’ve committed myself to maintaining through my 20’s and as I enter my 30’s.
If I do a morning run, I meditate for 15 minutes upon returning home, before my shower.
How soon after waking up do you check your phone? [Check/send emails, social media]
The first thing I do upon waking is check my phone for emails and news alerts.
As a communications professional, knowledge is power in the 24-hour news cycle.
I never check social media, nor do I send emails, if I can help it.
I try to be considerate of others morning routine.
What are the most important tasks you complete in the morning?
Exercising, and drinking a “green drink” made from my juicer. I do not drink caffeine.
I quit after years of drinking three to four cups a day.
Exercising and drinking my fruits and vegetables in the morning gives me sustained energy through my 13-hour days.
I have a more restful sleep, and never wake up groggy in need of a cup of joe to function.
What is your bedtime routine?
I have a horrible bedtime routine. I work late hours and usually come home to more emails. If I am not working, I read for the next day, or to get up to speed.
Working with a variety of clients means I have to be updated on the latest
Energy, Criminal Justice Reform, Voting Rights, and Education Reform news and policies.
But on Mondays, I watch trash TV and/or Football.
Are you able to keep the same routine when you’re traveling or in a different environment?
When I travel, I keep the same routine as best I can.
That means, even when I am on the road, I am either running or doing an exercise routine in a hotel gym.
Do you stick to your routine on the weekends or do you tweak it?
My weekends are nothing like my work week.
You can usually find me somewhere in DC with my beautiful
little girls, Brooke and Riley, at a park or in a museum.
Do you see a change in your day if you forget/don’t to follow your morning routine?
When I don’t follow my routine my day doesn’t always shape out the way I’d like it to.
When I miss my morning workout, I usually remain lethargic the rest of the day.
My mind is less sharp, I try hard not to fall asleep at my stand-up desk.
